Tape and virtual tape analysis for z/OS

zPulse Tape counts virtual tape mounts per LPAR, follows the response time of virtual tape, reads your TS7700 VEHSTATS files and your tape catalogue to show volumes and capacity by tape type. It replaces EATM, with scheduling and a daily mail.

Know what is really on your tapes.

A tape analysis on z/OS has two halves. One is activity: mounts, response time and cache behaviour of virtual tape. The other is content: how many volumes are active or scratch, and how much capacity your cartridges use. zPulse Tape covers both, from your tape management catalogue, your RMF and CMF reports and your TS7700 statistics.

zPulse Tape is the module for tape and virtual tape. It reads your tape management catalogues, TS7700 statistics and the tape activity in RMF and CMF reports, and keeps the catalogue between scheduled runs.

Questions it answers

  • How many virtual tape mounts do we have, per LPAR, over the day?
  • Is the TS7700 cache throttling, and when?
  • How many volumes are active or scratch, per tape type, and how much capacity do they use?
  • How are the active and scratch volumes evolving over time?
  • What is the response time of virtual tape, by LPAR?

What it analyses

What zPulse Tape analyses

  • Virtual tape mounts

Virtual tape mounts per LPAR over time, with a device type filter, and the virtual and physical mounts of each TS7700 cluster from VEHSTATS.

  • Response time of virtual tape

Tape I/O stacked by LPAR with response, connect, disconnect, IOSQ and pending time, from RMF or CMF tape device activity.

  • TS7700 clusters

Cluster CPU use, cache throughput and throttling, read and write volume, physical mounts and virtual drive use, from VEHSTATS files.

  • Catalogue and capacity

Active and scratch volumes, single and multi-volume files, used and available capacity, with one set of columns per tape type and a DFHSM column.

  • Filters and capacity settings

Filter by dataset name, volser (with * wildcards) and last change date. Capacity Config sets the volser ranges, tape types, compression and capacity.

  • Capacity over time

The catalogue accumulates between runs. The scheduled tape study writes a capacity workbook that the Tape Management Xlsx tool charts over time.

Tools

Tools for tape data

Tools open a report or a folder and show charts and tables on one subject. Each card of the catalogue says which file the tool reads.

Automatic studies

Three tape mails, every day

A scheduled tape study can send a standard report with volumes and capacity by tape type, a tape performance mail with response time charts, and a VEHSTATS mail with the cluster charts. The period covered is in each subject. These mails do not chart a 60-day history: that is for the DASD and CPU mails.

  • Catalogue accumulated between runs
  • Daily run time, source folder and recipients set once
  • Time granularity of the performance charts: native, hour or day
  • The standard report is not sent when there is no new catalogue file

If you used EATM

EATM followed your tape management system, robotics and virtualisation, and published fill rates as reports. zPulse Tape keeps the catalogue analysis and adds virtual tape mounts, response time and TS7700 statistics.

FAQ

Questions about zPulse Tape

What does zPulse Tape read?

Tape management catalogues in text form (DFSMSrmm, CONTROL-T/M and CA-1), TS7700 VEHSTATS files, and the tape device activity in your RMF or CMF reports.

Can it analyse mounts on a TS7700?

Yes. VEHSTATS Report shows the virtual and physical mounts, cache total and cache throttling, and virtual drive use for the TS7700 clusters.

Does it cover real tape as well as virtual tape?

The catalogue study works on your tape management catalogue, with one set of columns per tape type. The mounts and response time views cover virtual tape, and VEHSTATS covers the TS7700.

Does it read other tape catalogue formats?

zPulse reads DFSMSrmm, CONTROL-T/M and CA-1 catalogues. If you use another tape management product, ask us before assuming it works.

Do I need to install anything on z/OS?

No. zPulse reads the report and catalogue files you already produce. It runs on its own server.
