DASD response time analysis for z/OS

zPulse Disk splits every I/O into IOSQ, pending, disconnect and connect time, by LPAR, LCU, volume and period, from your RMF or CMF reports. It is the analysis EADM made, rebuilt with history and scheduling.

Find where the response time goes.

A DASD response time analysis on z/OS starts with one question: is the delay in z/OS queuing, on the channel path, or in the storage system? zPulse Disk answers it from the reports you already produce, for one LPAR or for a whole sysplex, and shows when and on which volumes it happens.

zPulse Disk is the module for I/O and storage-system performance. It reads the DASD, cache, channel and queuing pages of your RMF or CMF reports and turns them into one study you can browse by LPAR, period, LCU, volume and storage group.

Questions it answers

  • Is the delay in z/OS queuing (IOSQ), on the channel path (pending), or in the storage system (disconnect, connect)?
  • Which volumes, LCUs or storage groups are hot, and at what time of day?
  • Did cache efficiency change after a microcode upgrade or a volume move?
  • Are the FICON paths and zHPF carrying their share of the I/O?
  • How does today compare with the previous days?

What it analyses

What zPulse Disk analyses

  • Response time by component

IOSQ, pending, disconnect and connect time, with the I/O rate, per LPAR and per period. Filters for TP, batch or both.

  • Hot devices and volumes

The 3390 devices and volumes with the highest response time or I/O rate, and the space used on each volume.

  • Cache behaviour

Track and read cache misses, delayed I/O, and workload against memory and disk, to compare before and after a cache or microcode change.

  • Front end and back end

Front-end and back-end throughput and block size, and back-end activity of the storage system.

  • FICON channels and topology

Channel use by LCU, I/O topology flow, HyperPAV activity, and zHyperLink I/O (RMF reports only).

  • Dataset activity

From a CMF dataset activity listing: I/O by dataset, job or volume, over 24 hours or the sum of 15-minute intervals.

Automatic studies

A daily DASD mail, with history

A scheduled disk study sends a DASD report by mail: per-period charts of the response time components, worst-volume tables, and the previous days as charts of up to 60 days. The period covered is in the subject.

  • Daily run time, source folder and recipients set once
  • Time periods, and filters with name patterns such as D2*
  • Optional local AI diagnostic, written to the report folder

If you used EADM

EADM profiled your I/O from RMF and CMF reports, by LPAR or for a whole sysplex, and mailed the results. zPulse Disk keeps that analysis and adds the studies, history and cache, FICON and topology views listed above.

FAQ

Questions about zPulse Disk

What does zPulse Disk read?

RMF post-processor reports and CMF reports, as text files, for one LPAR or for all the LPARs of a sysplex. The reports are produced from SMF records 74.1, 74.5, 78.3 and 73, and CMF dataset activity from SMF 42.

How is DASD response time split?

Into IOSQ (queued in z/OS before the I/O starts), pending (waiting for a channel path, control unit or device), disconnect (for example waiting on cache or on the back end) and connect (data transfer). zPulse charts the four components and the total.

Are all the screens available for both RMF and CMF?

Most are. The zHyperLink screen and the two electricity screens read RMF reports only, and stay empty for CMF files.

Do I need to install anything on z/OS?

No. zPulse reads the report files you already produce. It runs on its own server.

Can the analysis run every day without anyone starting it?

Yes. A scheduled study runs at a daily time on the files in a folder and sends the result by mail, with the covered period in the subject.

Does the AI diagnostic send my data anywhere?

No. It is optional and runs on Ollama on the same machine as zPulse. Without it, studies run as usual.
